Fad Diets Versus Dietary Guidelines

Reprinted with permission of the American Institute for Cancer Research.

The American Institute for Cancer Research has evaluated four of the most popular diet books of the moment. We wondered if, beneath the promises, any of these books offered advice about nutrition and weight loss that was based on sound science. We analyzed the potential effectiveness and possible health risks associated with each plan.

We discovered that all four share many of the same basic characteristics—characteristics that illustrate the limitations of fad diets in general. The books reviewed were:

  • Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution , by Dr. Robert Atkins
  • The New Beverly Hills Diet , by Judy Mazel and Michael Wyatt
  • Protein Power , by Michael Eades, MD and Mary Anne Eades, MD
  • Suzanne Somers' Get Skinny on Fabulous Food , by Suzanne Somers
